New lifters in the gym often ask the same question: “Do I need a belt or straps first?” The honest answer is that they solve two completely different problems, and most serious lifters end up owning both. Here’s how to tell which one you need right now.
What a Lifting Belt Actually Does
A lifting belt, like the BeastX 10mm Lever Belt, isn’t there to protect your back directly. It gives your core something to brace against, which raises intra-abdominal pressure and stabilizes your spine during heavy squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses. If you’re loading weight where your lower back feels unstable, a belt is the priority.
What Lifting Straps Actually Do
Lifting straps solve a grip problem, not a back problem. On exercises like deadlifts, barbell rows, and shrugs, your grip often fails before your back or legs do. BeastX Lifting Straps and Figure 8 Straps lock your hands to the bar so you can keep pulling past the point your forearms would normally give out.
So Which One First?
- If your lower back feels shaky under heavy squats or deadlifts → start with a belt.
- If your grip gives out before your back on pulling movements → start with straps.
- If you’re training seriously 3+ times a week and lifting heavy → you’ll eventually want both.
A Note on Grip Training
Some coaches recommend training grip naturally (without straps) on lighter accessory days, and saving straps for your heaviest working sets. This way you build real grip strength while still being able to overload your back and legs on your top sets.
